I'm considering downloading it for my Incredible, but the reviews were all over the place. Apparently lots of forced closes?

If you use this could you tell me what you think? Is it really THAT much better than the texting service that comes with it?

Thanks!!!

I have used handcent SMS since I got my phone. I also tried Chomp which I liked, but it's basically the same as Handcent.  I was having some issues with both apps running really slow so I removed both and re-installed Handcent and I still really like it. I have never had it force close on me, and it's speed has picked up, at least on my phone it has and I'm still running 1.5.

I would say try it out and if you don't like it you can always uninstall it Smiley

Edit: just saw the second part of your question. Honestly, yes I believe it is THAT much better than the original texting app that came with the phone. It's more customizable and fun to change around and experiment with settings. To me, the native messaging app is boring. But if you're not looking for colors or other customizations, then no, it's probably not much better in that sense.

There are two things that make handcent awesome for me.  First, handcent has a popup when you get a new text message, which will allow me to replay to it (called quick reply) without actually opening the main app.  You can set it to popup above or below the lock screen (though if you're using lockbot, it will only popup above the lock screen).  The other thing I really like is if you do a long hold on the search button (the magnifying glass), it will allow you to do a "quick compose" (essentially the same as the popup, allowing you to write a message without opening the main app).
Also something that I love, since Verizon limits you to 160 chars per msg and won't split them into multiple messages like just about every other service does (grumble-grumble), this app has the ability to do that, as well.

I've tried looking for other apps that will allow me to do all this while still using the main messaging app, but it doesn't exist.  Popup is nice, but I haven't found a quick compose app.  =D

Most people here use it and seem to like it. I plan on installing it myself and test driving it, and like bkle44 said, if I don't like it it'll be gone.

I've used it since getting this phone.  Love it.  Not only does it save on battery life but you can customize it to your liking.  I wouldn't go back.  Oh, and I've never had the force closed issue.  It's a really nice app.

I recently just uninstalled it. I never had any force closed issues, but it did seem to be laggy on my phone. It would take 2 to 3 minutes to begin to type a text. I probably will give it another try, though. The customization and possibilities with this application were great. Hopefully, it won't be as laggy when I reinstall it.

One thing I don't like about handcent is that on the pop up msg you can't change the keyboard to landscape.  Its a bit harder to type on the compact qwerty.

Also, are you not able to send pic msgs from handcent?  I tried to send one 3 times to the same person and they said that they couldn't see any picture. Am I missing something?

Kingpin, landscape mode does work with the pop-up but only if you already have the phone in landscape mode.  That may not help at all I know lol i just wanted to inform you that it IS possible but honestly, who walks around holding the phone sideways?? lol you may nevr get it in landscape unless you are watching something Smiley. Me, personally, i don't use landscape mode

I've had my pop up set to allow landscape mode since i installed it and it switches back and forth regularly, no matter how you look at it first..

You can't uninstall apps that came pre-installed with the phone, although, with the native Message App you can disable all notification from it.  So you will only have Handcent giving notifications, not getting 2 for every text you get.

What about the pic msgs? Are you guys able to send MMS with Handcent?  I tried to send one 3 times the other day and the person said that there was no pic. Before i sent it, it said was too big and gave option to resize before sending and i did that.

Has anybody figgured out how to install and activate the Handcent keyboard? The instructions are clear up to the "long press ?123 key". My Incredible don't got one of those keys. Huh
